Red Carpet Trends: 20s Style Waves

Get side swept for this Fashion Do’s: Retro 20s style waves! One of the biggest trends in fashion that is an up-and-comer is the 1920s era influence, especially for the Spring 2013 and Pre-Fall 2013 runways. One of my favorite examples of the 20s style was at the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards where so many celebrities wore the side swept lose waves that are so romantic. Stars like Heidi Klum, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Lopez, Isla Fisher, Megan Fox, and Rachel Weisz rocked this look and its super easy to do!

Here is a simple How-To from my favorite blog The Beauty Department that shows you step by step of hot to get 20s style waves. All you need is a medium barrel curing iron, a clip, a comb, and some hair spray.

1. Clip the top half of your hair up

2 Curl the bottom layer with the curling iron, making sure to curl your hair in inside curls (toward your face)

3. Curl the rest of your hair in sections and make sure it is all curled the same way (inside)

4. Spray your curls with hairspray and let them set for a minute or two

5. Take your comb and gently brush out your curls, start to brush them so they form the same ascending shape

6. Once you have brushed them all out, curl the ends so they all consistently curl under

7. Finish off with hairspray and you have been transported back to the retro age!

This year’s 2012 MTV Video Music Awards took place in Los Angeles, CA at the iconic Staples Center where celebrities brought their best, wackiest, and excitement! Like the Grammy’s, the VMAs are a perfect event to go all out in terms of fashion, creativity, and artistry. Whether you go crazy or elegant, the VMAs are the place for music artists to really express their individuality, even if it is quite puzzling!

Best Dressed hands down goes to Rihanna! The Video of the Year winner literally glowed in this gorgeous white backless dress while rocking her new short and sweet pixie cut! Pink and Miley Cyrus wore edgy long sleeved gowns and bleach blonde rocker Mohawks!

Worst Dressed is definitely between Nicki Minaj, who wore a lace a red trimmed body suit that resumed what Spider-man’s girlfriend would wear to look sexy, and Kesha who wore an over sized lace cutout dress that looked like a mens shirt. No no no!

Gowns are always a favorite of stars on any red carpet and so was Katy Perry who looked soft and feminine in an Ellie Saab black floral gown! Alicia Keys also look fabulous in a one shoulder gold gown that flattered her post baby figure!

Short and sassy was also astar favorite on the carpet when Zoe Saldana floated down in this light pink flapper style dress that really showed off her legs! Emma Watson is always evolving with fashion and came out in a fun mix-match of patterns  in a fun top and short skirt!

Group arrivals are alwas fun to see especially when it was the newest popular boy bands, The Wanted and One Direction looked dapper in their trendy suits with cohesive color combos! Team USA’s Fab Five looked quite polished as they walked the red carpet together and announced Alicia Keys’ performance. Definitely gold  in their eyes tonight!

Friday Favorite: Ombre, Ombre, Ombre

Ombre! The word that has been falling out of the mouths of everyone in fashion, Hollywood, and every store in America! The ombre trend has swept like wildfire over this past summer season has taken over fashion and beauty! One of the most popular trends has been ombre highlights and worn by celebs like Khloe Kardashian, Drew Barrymore, and Jessica Biel! The ombre highlights trend brought new meaning to grown out room! The trick is when you go into your salon, have your stylist add tons of peak-a-boo highlights to give the ombre affect! You can also go more daring and add colored ombre highlights like Jessie J and Lauren Conrad! Adding pastel tips into your hair can really give you a funky edge that will definitely make you stand out!

The cascading fade from one color to another has been taken to a new level and polished onto nail art! Reflecting the colors of a sunset, the ombre nail trend is great with different shades of pastel in the same color family. The best way to apply is with a makeup spnge, paint the colors onto the sponge and apply over nails. Voula! You will have the cutest ombre nails that will definitely get you so many compliments!

Ombre has swept over the world of fashion as well on the red carpet, the runway, and fashion blogs all over the internet! Just recently, singer Beyonce wore a black and purple ombre dress by Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci at the 2012 Met Gala Awards where she showed off her rocking post-baby body! Singer Cheryl Cole dazzled at Queen Elizabeth’s 60th Diamond Jubilee wearing a stunning Spring 2012 Couture gown by Polish designer Ewa Minge! The black and white ombre dress made Cole look like she was floating as she sang Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now.” Ombre has also been all over the Spring/Summer 2012 Runway shows in forms of dresses, tops, skirts, and shorts!

I know that ombre shorts can either be hard to find or on the pricier side, so here is a quick little DIY Ombre shorts project! Here is what you will need:

  • Jean Shorts
  • Measuring Cup
  • Bottle of liquid dye
  • Bucket
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Water

Step One: Rinse your shorts with water

Step Two: Add 2 gallons of hot water to bucket along with 1/3 cup of dye. Mix well

Step Three: Dip shorts in half way and set for 10 minutes. After the time is up, pull shorts up exposing half of the dyed part. Leave the last part in for another 10 minutes to get a darker shade of color on the bottom.

Step Four: Remove shorts and rinse until the water runs clear. Hang out to dry to let dye set!

There you have it! Easy ombre shorts and trust me you will be feeling trendy every time you wear these beauties!

What the Wild Things Wear: Mulberry Fall 2012

Fashion comes in all forms, shapes, and sizes! in the Mulberry Fall 2012 Collection, “Where the Wild Things Are,” was an apparent quirky theme throughout their runway show and ad campaign. The collection consisted of very warm colors like brown and orange with constructive interesting pieces like heavy coats, sweater, and bags perfect for the fall and winter seasons. What was so fun with their theme was the large fuzzy monsters who were too shy to pose for the pictures. The runway was very fun as well with the giant owl-like monsters who greeted the onlookers while the models showed off striking pieces that had original textures like leather, fur, and hair! The Mulberry Fall 2012 collection is straight out of a story book and definitely memorable!

Olympic Pride: Trends from the 2012 London Summer Olympics

If you have been on the edge of your seat watching some of the most memorable moments in the 2012 London Olympics Games unfold, you have to have noticed all of the fashion trends that are spreading like wildfire from athlete to athlete! One of my favorites that has been very popular amongst the women competing in Swimming has been patriotic nails! Athletes like Gold medalist Miss Franklin of the USA, Emily Seebohm of Australia, and many other women swimmers have dawned their nails with a manicure that represents their flag. Swimmers like Ruta Meilutyte from Lithuania and Rebecca Adlington of Great Britain painted the colors of the home country flags as well. The patriotic trend has spread into Track and Field stars and many other Olympic hopefuls going for the gold!

Beach Volleyball is always a favorite sport of mine to watch and this year the two American teams have had similar tastes in hairstyles. Both Misty May and Kerry Walsh along with rival US team Jennifer Kessy and April Ross are big fans of the high ponytail braid! All four Olympic players are all about keeping their hair out of their face in order to focus on the game. May and Walsh both pull their hair into high ponytails and braid to keep it secured. While Ross prefers this hairstyle as well, her partner Kessy prefers a low ponytail with colorful hair-ties sectioning off the ponytail. Both teams are focused with their eyes on gold and rest assured their hair will not interfere with their focus!

Makeup is not usually worn at the Olympics unless it is subtle, natural, or a touch more in the gymnastics and synchronized swimming events. But Bazillion gymnast Daniele Hypolito along with her teammates sported the colors of their home fag as eye makeup. The bright colors drew attention to their eyes and were a fun way to show your pride for your country in a creative way. Watch more of the Olympics and see what’s trending amongst your favorite athletes!

Purple-y Correct: Pastel Purple Hair

Pastels have seemed to have cast a spell on the spring 2012 trends, not only in fashion but in hair styles as well! My favorite Fashion Police Star Kelly Osbourne has been rocking her purple hued hair with confidence for a few months! She went gradually from a light grey with purple undertones to a full on pastel lavender shade of purple, and I think its fabulous! All around Pinterest and fashion blogs, I keep seeing the purple hair and it is finally trending to have your hair a different color other then the “normal” colors! I think in times like these, anyone should be able to color their hair or whatever they want! As long as they are happy that is all that matters! I would recommend to have a color like this professionally done especially if you have dark hair! Check out some the lovely fashion photography below of pastel purple hair and decide if you are willing to go lavender!

All Chalked Up: Colored Tips

Adding some color to your do is something that has been very popular this time of year! Celebs like Katy Perry, Kelly Osbourne, and even Joan Rivers have added a little and a lot of pastel colors to their normal locks! But you may be thinking, this is way to big of a step to dye your hair a crayon color, but here is a quick DIY fix that will wash out: Chalk Tips! That’s right! You can have temporary colored tips and highlights that are so easy to do yourself, super cheap, and completely safe on your hair! Whether you are attending a themed party, Electric Daisy Carnival, or just feeling daring, this fun colorful twist is perfect for jumping off the cliff of your style boundaries! I know this all looks really complicated, but trust me using chalk to temporarily color your hair is very simple! Here is what you will need:

  • Soft Pastel Chalk (DO NOT get oil based because it will be a little harder to get out)
  • A bristle brush
  • ( If you have dark hair, wet it before you apple the chalk. If you have lighter or blonde hair DO NOT wet it because it could leave a stain.)

All you have to do is twist the ends of your hair and run the chalk over the twisted section. Untwist the section and lightly brush through the color removing any excess powder. The colors will naturally fade throughout the day and to completely remove, brush through your hair and shampoo and condition to add moisture back into your tips. Go for your temporary edgy color tips quick fix with these easy steps! Mix and match any color to correspond with your outfit or occasion and have fun getting a lot of compliments on your new look! ~ <3
